International Women’s Week Feature #2 – Laurie

I’ve chosen to revive this blog through positivity; by featuring the most inspirational women I know for the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8th. As such, I’ll be featuring one special woman every day this week, of those I am fortunate enough to know, who are changing the world just by virtue of being who they are.

The second person I wanted to feature this week was my best friend Laurie. Sure, I’m biased because she’s my best friend, but honestly, there are a number of reasons why you’d want to stick around someone for over thirty years (we old, girlfriend!) I could go on for quite a while, but here’s the abridged version.

Image of Laurie for International Women's WeekLaurie’s not only a high-powered manager at one of Canada’s largest insurance companies, but she’s also been active and hugely influential in one of the largest and well-respected sororities in North America. Though this medium, she’s done extensive charity work, and coached many generations of younger sorority sisters to support and inspire one another during her tenure as President of the Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi (a title she held due to popular demand for an impressive 6 years!) and now as Network Development Specialist. Through her coaching and leadership, many chapters of AOII have both been born and fulfilled their potential and beyond.

And aside from all that super cool stuff, she’s a wonderful, caring and absolutely hilarious person with a generous soul. She taught me how to stay young at heart, how to find confidence through my endless self-doubt, and how to learn to love myself during times I could barely look at myself. Her enduring friendship, loyalty and encouragement is directly responsible for much of the good I’m able to recognize in myself now, after years of struggling with depression and lack of motivation. I’ll be eternally grateful she has graced my life, and one of my fondest dreams for retirement involves us sitting on rocking chairs on a porch, talking about cartoons. (AMBITION!)

She’s a professional, social and personal inspiration to me and  many others, and as such, I am proud to salute her for International Women’s Week.
